Art and Commerce – walking the fine line
October 21st, 8:00pm
@ The Cafe at Books & Books, Arsht Center

Our guests:
Richeille Formento  – Creative Director
Bj Formento – Photographer

Richeille Formento was born in London and attended the prestigious Central St, Martins College of Art before working as an art director and designer within the fashion industry, working for a large umbrella company responsible for visually communicating new season looks on all graphic works and brands like Calvin Klein, Diesel, DKNY and various other independent fashion labels. The two met on a job in 2005 and got married 3 months later, that was a decade ago and have been partners in both life and work ever since. They come out of this hybrid lineage of art and fashion. You might call them third picture generation artists. They have shown they live for the journey and it will continue, leading wherever it takes them. They are professional tourists, bringing expertise, imagination and an almost alien gift for absorbing and rendering the spirit of a time and place. William S. Burroughs, who loved to collaborate and who created “the cut up method” with painter Brion Gysin, said that when two minds work together they create a third mind. Here we see that two eyes can create a third eye, and everyone knows that a third eye can see through time and space, showing us things otherwise invisible.

BJ Formento was born in Hawaii and grew up in the Philippines. After receiving his BFA in Photography from the Academy of Arts University of California, he moved to New York and studied with Eugene Richards and Arnold Newman, and assisted Richard Avedon, Mary Ellen Mark, and Annie Leibovitz. Since 2001, he has shot for a host of publications and advertising clients while developing his art photography work. Richeille Formento was born in London and attended the prestigious Central St. Martins College of Art before working as an art director in the fashion industry.

Formento and Formento’s work has garnered a passionate following in a short time with representation and exhibitions that span the globe.  From 2013-2014 Edelman Arts, Traffic Art Space and Robert Klein Gallery exhibited American Beauty Down on Bruised Knees and Fahey Klein Gallery exhibited Japan Diaries in Los Angeles.  The Formentos were a top finalist in Vogue’s New Exposure Competition 2012, working with Bottega Venetta and Red Digital Camera. The couple’s work was featured in Vogue Italia’s Corso Como Gallery, Milan in both 2012 and 2013. Vogue Italy, is a continuous supporter of their work, featuring them monthly on Vogue.it. In September 2013 the Formentos celebrated the release of their first art tome, Circumstance, published by YK Editions, accompanied by a short documentary on their work shown at the Pompidou Museum in Paris. Their 2nd book is coming out winter of 2015 published by Teneues Books entitled “Cinematic Chronicles”.  Their increased presence in the international art fair circuit includes Paris Photo, AIPAD, The Armory Show, Photo Shanghai, Art Silicon, Art Miami, Art Wynnwood and Photo London.
